• Area Description: From Hidden Valley Trailhead we toured up to Trailridge road and then around to Hanging Valley. We descended down through the old ski area.

• Weather Description: As expected a breezy day in Rocky Mountain National Park. Snow transport was intense but thankfully warm temperatures made the day acceptable.

Snowpack

• Snowpack Description: In most areas NTL and ATL there is, 120cm+ of snow and a very stout midpack that is made up of what feels like 60 to 100cm of pencil or 1 finger snow (probed). The top 50cm of the snowpack was made up of a variety of crusts and weak layers. On south aspects below treeline there is a thin breakable suncrust. North, northeast and east aspects near treeline have a weak layer that was reactive down about 20 to 30cm (see snow profile). Above tree line was largely stripped of snow back to a very firm surface except for sheltered features that allowed the snow to build up. Wind slabs were small not very reactive and found well below ridgetops.

Avalanches

• Avalanche Description: Both these avalanches looked old. Possibly from last weeks storm or the day windslabs were breaking on Berthoud Pass February 3, 2022.
