Accident Summary

PRELIMINARY: A snowmobiler went missing in March. Hunters saw him in the Lick Creek area northeast of Lowman on March 12, 2023. Hikers discovered his snowmobile in a slide path on Red Mountain on August 3, 2023, and authorities recovered the body a day later. The Sheriff said the rider was probably "on a ridge top and triggered an avalanche, before going down roughly 800 feet." "Hundreds" of avalanches complicated the initial search, and the rider was not wearing an avalanche transceiver. The area is not covered by a backcountry avalanche forecast.
